HOBY Indiana started in 1978 and the first Leadership Seminar was held in the spring of 1979. The seminars have been held at various locations throughout the state including Butler University, Ball State University, IUPUI, Marian College, University of Indianapolis, and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Over 7,500 Indiana high school sophomores have participated in the seminars during HOBY Indiana's 29-year history. The HOBY Indiana Seminar started as a 3-day leadership seminar. In the late 1990s the seminar expanded to 4 days to allow for expansion and improvement of the program. In addition to the Leadership Seminar, HOBY Indiana has an active Alumni Association that is dedicated to continuing the leadership opportunities experienced at the HOBY Seminars. HOBY Indiana has no paid staff and relies on a dedicated group of volunteers to plan and execute each seminar. We are a non-profit with affiliates in all 50 states. Most affiliates are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
HOBY alumni return to their communities applying skills and ideas learned at the seminar. Community entities all over Indiana as well as the United States count on HOBY "ambassadors" to continue the tradition of HOBY service. While at HOBY, ambassadors learn how to become community leaders and realize their full potential.
2014 HOBY Indiana Seminar Information
Dates: June 12-15, 2014
Location: Butler University, Indianapolis, IN
When and where will the program be held?
The 2014 HOBY Indiana Seminar will take place at Butler University in Indianapolis, from Thursday, June 12 through Sunday, June 15.
What is the cost to attend, and how do I register?
There is a $150 fee to register a student to attend the four-day leadership seminar, but the benefits students receive far out weigh the cost to attend. Please contact Seminar Chair Sabrina List for more information if the cost of the program is an issue. Each September, all high schools in the U.S. are invited to register sophomores to attend. Ask your school counselor or principal what the selection process is for your school.
What are the accommodations like?
Participants will be assigned to dorm rooms on floors reserved exclusively for HOBY. Two months prior to the event, HOBY Indiana will provide instructions on what you need to bring. You’ll also receive a phone call from your small group facilitator a few weeks prior to the seminar. Participants of all HOBY programs will receive nutritious meals and have an opportunity to inform us of any special dietary considerations prior to the event.
What if I am registered and then unable to attend?
If circumstances arise that prevent you from attending the program you are registered for, we would like to give another student from your school the opportunity to attend. Please immediately go to the high school counselor or principal who registered you and inform him/her of your situation. For the Leadership Seminar, please also contact Seminar Chair, Sabrina List. While participants are typically required to stay for the entirety of the four-day seminar, special arrangements may be made under extenuating circumstances.
What happens after I am registered?
Once you have been registered for HOBY Indiana, you will receive more detailed information about what to bring and what to expect. You will receive details from HOBY Indiana two months before the event – the information may come via US mail or via e-mail, so be sure to watch for it. Make sure to mark the program dates on your calendar and get ready for a memorable experience! Should you have any questions regarding HOBY Indiana, feel free to contact Sabrina List or Holly Marks.
